  1. My daughter is 6 and has celiac. (She was diagnosed almost 18 months ago). Her constant symptom is constipation. How can I increase her fibre intake? I know flax seed is good but I am not sure what to do with it!

    • HI Tera,
Thanks for a great question. There are a few things I think you should consider.
      1. Constipation can be a sign of gluten ingestion–yes, diarrhea is more common, but some people actually get constipated. Has she had recent, every 6 months or yearly check up with her GI doctor to make sure she isn’t getting hidden gluten in her diet. I’m guessing this is an unlikely cause of her constipation, but wanted to mention it.
      2. Next would be what she is and isn’t eating. I would recommend making sure she gets adequate fruit and vegetables: total of 5 servings/day—the fresher (read: not canned) the better as these will have more fiber. Also, some foods, especially bananas, cheese, milk, marshmallows and pretzels can actually cause constipation so I would limit these items.
      3. Make sure she is adequately hydrated. Water is best.
      4. Encourage activity. Helps “move things along” through the GI tract.
      5. You mentioned flax which is a great source of fiber….I posted a recipe a while back for Pumpkin Flax Muffins that my whole family (although my daughter is the only one that MUST eat gluten free) loves! Check it out in the “loving” category.
      6. If constipation persists, discuss with her GI doctor to rule out any other cause or need for medication.

      Hope this helps!
