We all have them. Mine was during the 6-week period when Emerson was experiencing major gastrointestinal symptoms common with celiac disease but had not yet been diagnosed.
It was a warm August evening and we went for a walk around the block in our neighborhood. About halfway around we stopped to talk with some neighbors who have a daughter close to Emerson’s age. The girls were playing, moms were chatting, when the father said, “Um, Megan, I think Emerson …” He didn’t know what to say. Diarrhea all over his driveway! OMG. I didn’t know what to do. Throw Emerson in the stroller and run as fast as I could home, yelling apologies over my shoulder? Pretend like that couldn’t have come out of my daughter? Or just crawl under the rock and try to hide?
Thankfully, being parents themselves, my neighbors were calm and the mom took me in, let me get Emerson cleaned up and gave me a fresh diaper, while the dad hosed down the driveway. Two very important lessons learned: 1. I’m so thankful to live in a neighborhood filled with wonderful people. 2. I will never buy generic diapers again.
